Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is the use of computer systems to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimisation of a design. CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing. CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for print, machining, or other manufacturing operations.

Solid modeling refers to modeling of parts that occupy a volume in 3D space, which is a requirement for volumetric analysis, 3D printing and machining. Surface modeling is an intricate modeling of smooth surfaces to eventually form a solid. CAD Assembly is placing and constraining various parts in an assembly with relationship to each other. CAD Drafting is making of a digital drawing. Patent illustration refers to an image of a patent idea with its construction and working.
